homage to Jan Kaplicky / future system

international symposium and documentary screening which was held on the 4th until
the 7th december 2009 in Vienna

deutsch

In recent decades Jan Kaplicky and his London based office future systems have renewed
and rethought architecture and design. Their projects have been far ahead of their time.
While relatively few buildings have been realized, their qualities have created new
benchmarks in architecture. In particular, the publications of future systems’s numerous projects
and ideas have achieved a remarkable respect and influence on the architectural scene worldwide.

Jan Kaplicky left Czechoslovakia after the tragic events of 1968 and settled in London. Much later,
after the fallof the Berlin Wall, his office succeeded in winning the first international architectural
competition in the Czech Republic and was therefore ready to realize the national library in Prague.
Unfortunately the project was the subject of a political struggle quite separate from its
extraordinary architectural quality. (projectpresentation as pdf (8MB) © future systems)

On January 14, 2009 Jan Kaplicky surprisingly died on the way to a celebration for his newborn
daughter Johanna.

With a certain distance in time and in an emotionally neutral place between London and Prague
we will reflect on Jan Kaplicky’s visionary influence on both the present and future. .
